Settling into WordPress

The base link

Do you want yoursite.com to be the home page for WordPress but you don’t want the WordPress files all in your site’s root directory?
First put all the files from WordPress in one file if they aren’t already in one. Then move the index.php and .htaccess files from the root directory of WordPress to your site’s root directory. Open up the index.php and change the ‘./wp-blog-header.php’ to ‘./filename of wordpress folder/wp-blog-header.php’
Do make sure that you do not have another index.php in your root directory.

Adding smilies

To enable emoticons on your website you need to download a plugin from here.
One thing the site might confuse you on is that the smilies link in your WordPress sidebar does not appear until after you have extracted the zip file and put it in WordPress’ plugin folder. Which you get to in your ftp by this path WordPress > wp-content > plugins just drop the folder in.

Permalinks

Permalinks is the url. And you can change the structure of the permalink with WordPress. If you are using WordPress for a website and not just a blog the best permalink to use is going to Settings > Permalinks in the WordPress Dashboard, selecting custom and put in /%postname%/
Then get to your .htaccess file (in your root directory if you don’t have one just make a new file and name it .htaccess) add this:

&#60IfModule mod_rewrite.c&#62
RewriteEngine On
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
RewriteRule . /index.php [L]
&#60/IfModule&#62

When you go to a sub page your url should look like http://sitename.com/about

Changing default gravatar image.

Gravatar is an online program matching a visitor’s email and posting their avatar with their comment.

If you do not want to use WordPress’ default avatars, you can make you own and add it by using this code…
<?php
echo get_avatar( $comment, $size = '80', $default = 'your url');
?>

Place this in comments.php located which should be in your current theme. If you don’t have one you may need to get a comment hack that is at this site. A good place to put it is above the author link.

Settings?

Make sure you look at settings. They contain options that are critical to making your WordPress experience as easy as possible.

Themes

Themes are WordPress’ layouts. It incorparates it on every page so you don’t have too. All you have to do is tell it how to do it.
Themes can be hard to make so you can find premades on the internet by searching Google.

Making pages

To edit the layout of a page for your theme the document is called page.php You can edit your theme in the admin panel. In the left sidebar: Appearance>Editor
When you make pages your title is automatically the link to the page, but you can change it by editing the permalink right below the title. Just make sure you save it there and then re-save the page to make it stay.
You can make your page have a sub folder by saying who its parent page is. This option is located in the right sidebar section “Attributes”.

If you want to disable comments that is under the discussion tab in your editing page. Just scroll down a bit.

Last Words

I know I got WordPress to develop a website not a blog. So you should realize that WordPress has a blogging system and you don’t have to get fanupdate, cutenews, or anything else. One less chore. :)
